A PIT OF QUICKSAND

                                 
“Hurry up!” Amelia shrieked, seeing a puddle of foam swirling around her feet.  

Water poured into the hole and its walls started collapsing.            
                       
They finished emptying the trunk in the nick of time. The opening completely filled with water and sand, leaving Thad in it up to his ribs.  He struggled to climb out of what was beginning to feel like a pit of quicksand. Just as Amelia reached for her shovel to help him escape, the strengthening backwash floated it away. 


Thad put his arms up in a last attempt and Amelia pulled, working harder than she ever worked in her life, freeing him from what would be a watery death.
