Turning to leave, the car door slammed closed in front of
her. Wind, she reasoned, nervously tugging at the door’s handle. A shadow
figure ran across the porch and into the vastness of the Victorian’s yard. Hands trembling, Jacquelyn jumped behind the wheel. Milky-colored
balls of light began darting off the shrubbery and roof, acting as a sentinel
army guarding the property.
Stop it, she thought aloud. You know better than to
believe all those contrived stories about the house being haunted. Daphne makes
them up just to generate business.
Jacquelyn drove off, swerving to avoid the circles of light,
lest they get angry and follow.
