RIP IN THE UNIVERSE

A portion of the baby-blue sky on the horizon turned a deep indigo. The water surrounding the dock roiled, lapping against wooden pilings and splashing over the pier.

A rip in the Universe formed and a muted gray schooner sailed across, creating a sense of dread for the onlookers, even Amelia. It came forward rapidly—skimming the inky water’s surface and traveling through all the pleasure craft, fishing boats, and water skiers who had no awareness of its presence. The guests stood, horrified by the unfolding scene, as the sailboat headed straight toward the house.

So much Symbolism in this passage. Let's start with the element of water.  Any thoughts???

BALLS OF LIGHT

Turning to leave, the car door slammed closed in front of her. Wind, she reasoned, nervously tugging at the door’s handle. A shadow figure ran across the porch and into the vastness of the Victorian’s yard. Hands trembling, Jacquelyn jumped behind the wheel. Milky-colored balls of light began darting off the shrubbery and roof, acting as a sentinel army guarding the property.

Stop it, she thought aloud. You know better than to believe all those contrived stories about the house being haunted. Daphne makes them up just to generate business.

Jacquelyn drove off, swerving to avoid the circles of light, lest they get angry and follow.

ARROW IN MIRROR

She cried out, "Who is that child?"

The voice responded, “Gwendolyn, please find him and help him. Then I’ll have a gift for you.”

“Find who…help who…what gift?”

Everything faded away except for an arrow floating across the mirror and disappearing into thin air.

DANDELION FLUFF

Although they were both content, even with silence between them, Charles wished he could second-guess Daphne, just once. He longed to become her lover and protector, but always hit a wall with her. What was it that kept them apart?

Trying to capture Daphne was like running after dandelion fluff in the wind – one could never hold the entire cluster once it became a hundred different pieces.

DARK, SEARING EYES

She looked into the mirror again. Was someone else’s dark, searing eyes looking back?

She panicked and jumped away, hitting something by the tub with her foot. It was a small, rectangular brass placard that read—Doctor Is In.

The message on it was unnerving, as though the former owner was letting her know he was also in the room.

Holly Tree Symbolism

Celtic lore sees holly greenery and berries as symbols of life’s  enduring presence, even during cold, seemingly dormant months. And so it must be with us, or...

"Isolation can play tricks with the mind when harsh winds howl through cracks and crevices of an old building and long shadows fill dark spaces." Daphne's Web
